Building on heritage
Cubase builds on Steinberg’s heritage, harnessing the passion and expertise to deliver one of the most advanced digital audio workstations today. Since Cubase was first introduced in 1989, it has constantly evolved and managed to re-invent the approach to digital music production time and again. Today, Cubase is the heart and soul of many production rigs, and integrates perfectly with Steinberg hardware and digital music products by Yamaha.
What is new in Cubase 9
Ground-breaking new features, streamlined workflows and stunning new plug-ins — the latest update enhances your favorite digital audio workstation in every direction and underlines Cubase’s claim of being the most complete DAW available. The new Lower Zone gives you direct access to editors and the MixConsole without leaving the Project window; the perfectly integrated Sampler Track opens up new creative possibilities; and the surgically precise frequency EQ takes your mix to the next level. The new Plug-in Sentinel, Multiple Marker Tracks, the improved Maximizer — Cubase 9 introduces loads of new features that you won’t want to miss in future music productions.
Zoning in on Cubase
Access all areas in the fastest and most convenient way. The new Lower Zone provides a neat and tidy overview. Your tools and editors are now just a mouse click away: the Lower Zone will enhance your workflow regardless whether you’re working mobile on a laptop or in a multi-screen studio environment.
Do you need that extra bit of flavor to spice up your production? Are you looking for a starting point? Enter the Sampler Track. It’s the fastest way to inspiration.
Just use any piece of audio to create a Sampler Track, play the sample chromatically, manipulate it with its on-board filters and controls, experiment and enjoy the sonic extravaganza only the Sampler Track can give you. And to top it off, the Sampler Track comes with Caleidoscope, a dedicated sample library with hundreds of samples and presets to get you started right away.
EQ with Frequency
The new Frequency EQ plug-in delivers exactly that what you’d expect from a tool that is supposed to enhance your productions: whether it’s smooth attenuation to blend your tracks you’re looking for or a tool giving you options of microscopic audio surgery. Frequency offers you eight bands, M/S support and Linear Phase mode for each band, Auto Listen to listen in on the adjustments you just made, Spectrum Display and even a musical keyboard to help you find the right tone. Frequency has all you need from basic tracking, mixing to advanced final polishing.
MixConsole History in the making
Ever wanted to compare different mixes with just one mouse click? Allow us to introduce you to MixConsole History. It’s a great new feature that tracks all changes made in the MixConsole and easily lets you choose several stages of your mixing process just by selecting them from a list. This means you’ll be getting your basic mixer undo/redo, but it also allows you to experiment freely with which mix suits your project best.
Comprehensive cloud collaboration… all the way
Our world is getting smaller by the day, and cloud collaboration plays a vital role in it. Whether you want to make remote recordings with VST Connect SE 4 in Cubase Pro or exchange projects via VST Transit in Cubase Pro 9 and Cubase Artist 9, find collaborators and partners all over the world, exchange ideas, get connected with others who share the same passion and be creative! No other DAW like Cubase has this level of cloud collaboration capabilities seamlessly integrated into your workflow. VST Connect SE 4 now offers the possibility to find new collaboration partners in a breeze. VST Transit adds further improvements and supports even more tracks and VST 3 third-party plug-ins.
It’s always a good idea to keep your recording and mixing levels nice and easy. But it’s a different story when finishing your productions. To let your final mix sound “contemporary” you won’t get around using our Maximizer. Not only did it get a new coat of paint but also an in-depth algorithm overhaul. Choose between the classic mode and the new modern mode to get the most out of your mixes, while keeping the result transparent, clear and brilliant.
Stability and reliability
Cubase 9 is one of the most stable and reliable DAWs on the market, allowing you to focus entirely on what’s really important: your creativity and your productions. Cubase 9 introduces several new features that emphasize this approach further, making the Cubase experience even more comfortable.
- New Plug-in Sentinel scans all your plug-ins at start up to check which are valid and which might harm your system’s stability
- Running in 64-bit only makes sure that you benefit from the most modern technology available
- Plug ‘n’ play support for USB devices on Windows
Have you ever wanted to use the Retrologue filters or effects separately? Well, now you can! The new Audio-Ins option offers you the opportunity to send audio to VST 3 instrument plug-ins supporting side-chaining. This will increase your creative sound design possibilities tenfold.
Multiple Marker Tracks
Cubase 9 allows you to use up to ten marker tracks. Imagine recording multiple instruments on several tracks and giving every one its dedicated markers. This means you not only have the power to structure your projects in a much more flexible way, from now you even can export stems and mixes using the cycle marker ranges.
The new AutoPan offers a much bigger variety and flexibility to creatively play with your sound in space. Make use of various shapes, sync modes, panorama settings and much more, which are all quickly accessible via the new user interface. If you like the new Maximizer you’ll certainly be happy to see that the Brickwall Limiter, Compressor, Expander, Gate and Envelope Shaper also have been graphically overhauled for a similar look and feel and streamlined workflow. The improved interface and detailed representation of the parameters will help you to get the most out of your state-of-the-art effects processors.
Retrologue 2 takes Steinberg’s acclaimed virtual analog synthesizer to a new level, adding many enhancements implemented in a way that are easy and intuitive to use.

Steinberg has pioneered many aspects of MIDI sequencing on a computer, and tools such as the Score, Drum and List Editors have become indispensable to modern music production. With easy-to-use editing and innovative composing and notation tools, Cubase offers the most complete MIDI composing and sequencing toolset available today.
Powerful MIDI editors
At the heart of MIDI sequencing in Cubase is the Key Editor: a breathtakingly powerful yet transparent tool that opens up virtually limitless possibilities for songwriters and composers. Based on more than three decades of experience, the Key Editor comes with an ultra-intuitive handling and highly accurate tools.

VST Expression 2
VST Expression is a groundbreaking technology by Steinberg that provides an ultra-intuitive way of working with instrument articulations, dynamics and multiple controller values. Its second generation is based on three core technologies: Note Expression, Expression Maps and VST Dynamics. Expression Maps help you work with musical articulations, while VST Dynamics allow for highly intuitive handling of dynamics.
On top of this, Note Expression offers a revolutionary approach to create and edit multiple controller values in a single graphical interface, directly on the note they belong to — an invaluable feature for demanding orchestral arrangements as well as cutting-edge electronic music.
Intelligent compositional tools
Cubase features a global Chord Track to facilitate working with chords in a project context and enables transform and harmonize functions throughout the application. Advanced voicing options are used to reflect any changes made to the Chord Track to both MIDI and audio tracks processed with VariAudio in a harmonically correct and ear-pleasing way.
You don't have to be a musical genius to lay down beautiful harmonies when you're using Cubase. The powerful Chord Assistant helps you to generate everything from simple pop to complex jazz chord sequences that just sound great. Want to specify both the first and final chords but have no clue how to get there? This, also, is possible. The Chord Assistant lists chord suggestions from which you can choose.

Engineered exclusively for Steinberg’s audio production systems and unavailable on any other software workstation, the Control Room is a unique recording and monitoring environment seamlessly integrating performer mixes and monitoring setups into your recording and mixing workflow.

- State-of-the-art transient and tempo detection: optimize the timing, feel and flavor of live-recorded drum tracks
- Intuitive audio quantization
- Easy drum replacement
Drum recordings and drum loops
Transient and tempo detection
Cubase comes with a state-of-the-art transient detection. With this powerful tool at hand, you can detect single hits, rolls and ghost notes faster and more accurate than ever before. Best of all, hitpoints are automatically calculated in the background as soon as audio material is recorded or imported into the arrangement window.
Plus, the tempo detection algorithm accurately determines the tempo of any rhythmic audio material. The resulting tempo map can be used to keep the dynamic feeling of natural tempo variations or to remove unwanted tempo changes quickly.
Straightforward drum replacement
The bass drum needs some extra punch? The snare drum doesn’t cut through the mix? With the Hitpoint-to-MIDI function, it is very easy to replace, double or enrich live-recorded drum sounds. When the transients have been detected, a single click creates a MIDI track with a MIDI note for each drum hit. From here, it’s up to you which sampler or synth you want to fuel.
Smart multi-track editing
Simple and efficient — Track Edit Groups tie together what belongs together. When recording a guitar for example, it is common to record signals from different amps, microphone types or distances on separate tracks. With Track Edit Groups activated, related tracks are tied together and can be edited at once, making this feature a huge time-saver in the studio.
Cubase also allows you to warp-quantize multiple audio tracks at once using the convenient Quantize panel. By creating warp markers straight from hitpoints, both single audio loops as well as the entire arrangement can be non-destructively quantized with a single mouse click — just like MIDI parts! And because the audio events are warped instead of sliced, they automatically follow any tempo or pitch changes of your project while remaining unclutterd for easy arrangements.
Conjure the perfect take
Ultra-fast take comping
Building the perfect take has never been that easy — with the intuitive Lane Track concept. When recording several takes, Cubase instantly creates a Lane Track for each take. From here, it’s just a short way to perfection: simply swipe across the best parts and Cubase automatically creates a master take that contains all selected parts. In addition, the Comp tool offers handy click-and-drag features for immediate results.
Create, rename and manage parallel versions of the same track or tracks and use them to compare takes or create alternative versions of your recordings while keeping all track settings. Interfacing perfectly with existing track handling features like lanes, the flexible new TrackVersions feature will significantly speed up your workflow when working not only with audio but also MIDI, instrument, chord, tempo and signature tracks.
VariAudio offers completely integrated vocal editing and pitch alteration of individual notes in monophonic vocal recordings and can solve intonation and timing problems with a few clicks. Editing vocal lines in the Sample Editor is just as seamless and quick as if editing MIDI notes in the Key Editor.
The full integration with the Chord Track ensures correct pitch to your harmonies at all times! This interaction also lets you harmonize your lead vocals in beautifully composed choral arrangements. Plus, you can even edit multiple VariAudio parts across multiple tracks within one editor only. And yes, the popular autotuning effect is no big deal!

Plus, the Channel Batch Export feature allows the export of a multiple selection of mixer channels to audio files.
