I just spent the whole weekend getting to know the YRG. The first thing I did was to download the software package and update the guitar's firmware, which worked seamlessly. Then I checked out the software control panel that comes with the download. It's very extensive with parameters for adjusting velocity, the pitch or each string, the volume of the guitar vs. synth sounds, and much more. As one reviewer mentioned, I could hear that some strings weren't quite as loud as the rest.

I visited the forum at YouRockGuitar.com to get advice. By carefully loosening or tightening the various strings I was able to get the volume differences under control. I did notice that when loosening one string, the others got a little tighter, but by continuing to adjust them minutely as needed all the levels and string tension evened out. Then within the software control panel, I was able to further adjust the volume of the top E to bring it up a little more to suit my style of playing. While connected to my Mac G5, I tested the YRG with a tab notation program called "Progression."

I set the midi send on the guitar to have an individual channel for each string. In this way I was able to play in real time, and see the program create accurate guitar tab for my performance. Next I tried running some software synth plugins. I set the signal from all of the strings to go into just one midi channel. That worked fine too. I got the wii game cartridge with the YRG and checked out that option.

The wii recognized the guitar and I was able to navigate and play Guitar Hero with just the guitar. It's so much better having real strings to pick and a neck that feels "normal." Our band is having a practice this week and I'm supposed to play acoustic guitar on 2 songs. I spent a little time creating some patches that combine an acoustic sound with a touch of synth.

The software control panel real helps for tweaking patches. I can't wait to see the guys' f

The YRG is a very versatile digital sound guitar/midi controller/game controller. With a good sequencer program to record midi tracks and some software synthersizers and maybe an old midi instrument that might be laying around you can do a lot of things with this instrument. You must download the update USB PC controller screen utility so that while the guitar is plugged into the USB and powered on! you can tweak the response and tuning which then becomes set into the instrument until you change settings. I use PG PowerTracks Pro Audio sequencer for midi and audio as well as notation and a guitar live screen of notes played on a guitar neck, PoiZone standalone software synth, Proteus X software synth which you can download for free at Creative Professional's website, and an old Yamaha CX5M music computer which has nice bass DX7 sounds that I like. The YRG controls all of these things at the same time. The PoiZone is voiced from the PG sequencer while tracks are midi recording on the program using the USB cord which also provides power. But what blew me away was when I plugged in a midi cable into my CX5M and the YRG while it

was already on doing the other things I told you about and with an amp monitoring the instrument and with a mp3 player playing in the stereo input which mixes with the guitar and synth module sounds which are built into the instrument and feeds both a mono out and a stereo out. So I can do many things at the same time and can control 4 layered sounds for a wide choice of mixes or just for the fatness of the sound. Then as a game controller it works for all the game boxes, with a plug in adapter that I would not be surprised if this works while the other things are being used!

Note for best tracking and voicing use the tap setting and playing style like Stanley Jordan. I'm just saying, nothing personal just an observation.

I was immediately at home on the YRG with its molded fret board and MIDI triggering strings. Even though you are triggering touch sensitive buttons on the fret board, the look and feel (fret size and neck length are accurate) of the molded rubber made it easy to play chords and scale runs. 6 strings with adjustable sensitivity attached to MIDI triggers also gave the feel of playing a real guitar using my strumming hand.

On-board sounds and the ability to run off batteries made the YRG fun to simply fire up and play around my house wearing headphones. Some other great advantages were the ease of switching between tapping and strumming mode as well as quickly switching over to MIDI mode and triggering samples in Kontakt. Variable sensitivity settings (as well as a number of other options) gave me the ability to tailor the YRG to my playing style since I tend to play a bit heavier-handed.

The YRG also comes in at an amazing price for a fully-featured MIDI controller for guitar players.
