Put
the QMX-16X2 through its paces, and you'll admit that you would be
proud to have this one with you on stage, any time. There are other
stage mic/line mixers out there in this price range that are made out
of plastic and are so lightweight that you could pull them off the
table with a yank of the microphone cord. Not so for Hosa's QMX-16X2
audio console! Tote this baby by its unique, retractable rear-mounted
handle, and you will know you are holding a serious piece of
professional gear, built to handle the rigors of the road!
And
Hosa didn't skimp electronically on this great audio mixer, either.
They are using JRC4580 op-amps in the input stages for pristine audio
quality, and the channel faders are 60mm Alps faders ('nuf said?).
Gain-staging
within this desk is easy. Just set the channel trim control so that the
channel's peak LED lights only briefly on the loudest expected peaks,
and then raise the channel fader to the desired loudness. There's no
bottleneck at the master bus, so you can run all eight mic channels
PLUS the line-level stereo-input channels AND even use the Effects
Returns as line-level inputs, that's 16 inputs, folks all at once, with
headroom to spare! (Try THAT with one of those afore-mentioned
lightweights....) The three-band EQ per channel is nicely voiced for
live sound, and because of the great op-amps used, adds no unwanted
coloration or perceivable distortion.
The
QMX-16X2s on-board DSP (digital signal processing) is optimized for
reverbs and delays of the type normally used in live situations. Pay
special attention to the short delays for unobtrusive thickening of
vocals. It's a great, subtle effect, perfectly implemented. Of course
if you want to make it sound like your show originates from the Taj
Mahal, that's in there, too, as are various timed delays, slap-backs,
small rooms and choruses. Hosa concentrated on 16 programs that offer
useable, real-world effects that will be greatly appreciated by
musicians and soundmen everywhere, for enhancing live performance.
