The QCM-2 is a dual-diaphragm vacuum tube microphones whose polar pattern is ed by a 9-position rotary switch located on the dedicated power supply. So not only do you get cardioid, omni and figure-8 oatterns, but you also get 6 intermediate steps that allow you to, for example, set up the mic between a lead singer and a group of background singers, and dial-in precisely the appropriate levels of each simply by varying the microphone's polar pattern.
Or, use those intermediate steps to find the perfect cancellation for standing waves in small rooms that might otherwise sound boxy and muddy.

At the microphone, there are also two other controls worthy of note a low frequency rolloff switch (to control pickup of rumbling traffic or air conditioners, and a -10dB pad to control sensitivity and out-put when recording very lound instruments.

In the end, with exceptional studio microphones such as the these, it's all about the character of the sound, and these great instruments produce all of the depth, detail, range and intimacy you would expect from microphones costing up to four times as much.

The QCM-2 ships in it's own protective foam-lined brushed-aluminum breifcase, complete with dedicated power supply, robust elastic suspension mount with extra elastic bands, foam wind sock, vinyl pouch, XLR to 1/4" adaptor, and all necessary multipin, XLR, and power cables.
