Akai Professional Tom Cat Analog Drum Machine

Tom Cat is an exciting true analog drum machine with five built-‐in percussion voices, including Kick, Snare, and Clap sounds with chromatically tunable Disco Toms. Onboard controls—all continuously variable—enable users to customize the tuning, amplitude envelopes, and volume of each drum voice separately for precise real-‐time adjustment.

Outfitted with six MPC-‐style pads and a built-‐in 32-‐step sequencer, Tom Cat provides an ultra-‐ responsive interface with a classic drum machine layout. Drum patterns can be fine-‐tuned using the Swing function, Pattern Select, and Tempo Control knob. A custom signal path, activated by its unique “Maul” circuitry, lets the user ‘dirty up’ their drum beats for just the right effect.

  • True analog drum machine with five percussion voices
  • Kick, Snare, and Clap sounds with chromatically tunable Disco Toms

This is a real sleeper.  A truly unique sound that holds it's own next to some of the classic Roland drum machines.  As someone who owns some of Roland's most sought after synths, I can say that I absolutely love the Tom Cat.

Extremely straight-forward with all the modern features I need coupled with warm analog drum sounds and the build quality is fantastic.   Metal enclosure, rubberized knobs, and tight pots. The wood sides are synthetic as expected but they actually look really decent and the unit has some good heft to it.

Owning the Rhythm Wolf as well, I wasn't sure if I really needed the Tom Cat.  To my excitement though they sound entirely different.  The Rhythm Wolf sounds a bit more primitive and subdued like a TR 77 while the Tom Cat has more of a brighter, snappier sound akin to a 606.  Rather, I'd say it was a warmer sounding, analog version of a 707... complete with hand claps!

You can't go wrong.  A solid, TR style, analog drum machine for under $200.
